Now, afternoon teas are a bit of a passion of mine. Thankfully my husband has quite the penchant too... he is if we are being honest only there for the cake and sweet things (he's a massive sugar fan). So when he surprised me with afternoon tea at our hotel he knew he was hitting a home run.
I have had afternoon tea in some of the finest hotels in the world (I hope to fill my blog pages with the details) and the author's lounge is way up there in every way.
For it to be an exceptional afternoon tea to me, it has to achieve certain criteria.
The second criteria I like to find is service and execution. The staff at the authors lounge were so lovely, kind and just the right amount of attentive. And they really went the extra mile.
The little things make the difference here... explaining the afternoon tea choices, keeping the tea flowing, and offering plate refills. The service should always be available, but never intrusive to the customer. Its a fine art and the difference between a good and average experience.
And the third criteria to be (in my opinion) an amazing afternoon tea is that the sandwiches, cakes etc should of course be Delicious, but also exciting, innovative and beautiful. I expect to be surprised and delighted when the sandwiches and cakes are served.
I want it to almost be too beautiful to eat ...this never really stops me though!
And wow, this afternoon tea really achieve's all of the above. My husband opted for the traditional tea set whilst I tried the Oriental tea set .Both were so delicious and served so beautifully.
I was particularly enamored with the oriental tea set which was so unique and unlike anything id ever seen before. And the actual tea is one of my favorite brands,Mariage Frères Special Blends, The marco polo rouge is to die for.
And finally, my last criteria for an exceptional afternoon tea is that it should be indicative to its location. It should feel like its location. It should be contextual. When you have tea at the authors lounge, you know you are somewhere exciting and exotic
As it happens, the authors lounge has history by the bucket load and it really tells its story... see what I did ha ha
Many famous writers have stayed at the hotel over the last three centuries. The Heritage Authors, Noël Coward, James Michener, Somerset Maugham and Joseph Conrad are now immortalised in new private lounges, really giving the lounge something unique
To add, Somerset Maugham wrote one of my husband and I's favourite books and now movie, The painted veil.
I mean... isn't this the cutest!?
My husband had told the staff that our afternoon was a surprise and that he wanted the tea to be special. So I was presented with a beautiful single rose at the end of our tea. It was so beautifully wrapped and finished with silk ribbon and such a lovely surprise...just the icing on top of a beautiful cake!
I honestly can not recommend the Authors lounge enough... I feel very passionately about what is such a beautiful and precious place. If you are visiting Bangkok, take a break from the hustle and bustle and treat yourself to a gorgeous experience
