As a country, Australia has a long history as one of the best tourist destinations in the world. It’s a big place with so much to offer, and such a contrast between the east and west coasts. However, as beautiful as mainland Australia is, we’re going to focus on some of the small islands that surround this wonderful country. You’ll be happy to know there are plenty of indescribably beautiful islands that you can visit down under. After looking at them all, here are the top three: Fraser Island Listed as a world heritage site, Fraser Island is full of sandy beaches and incredible wildlife. There is so much to do here - including sand dune riding across a Seventy Mile Beach. The island also boasts a tropical rainforest with all kinds of wildlife hiding inside. Walk out to the coast and you might be able to spot some rare whales as well! If the ocean isn’t your thing, there are loads of freshwater spots on the island too - such as the famous Lake McKenzie. It’s an island that’s packed full of nature and adventure, and there are plenty of great places to stay as well. Try to avoid going in the middle of summer when temperatures get a bit too hot to handle. Hamilton Island Over in Queensland, you will find a collection of islands - of which Hamilton Island is the most prominent. This has been a hotspot for tourists for many years, and there’s a variety of exceptional Hamilton Island accommodation available to make this a true holiday you remember forever. The island itself is surrounded by bright blue water and there’s one specific reason lots of people come here. If you swim or snorkel in the water, you can actually see some of the Great Barrier Reef! It’s one of the best places to experience it, and you can even take a helicopter ride to see it from above. Plenty of beaches surround this island as well, making it a relaxation paradise. Kangaroo IslandAs the name suggests, this island is home to the legendary Kangaroo species. Not only that, but it is also home to so many other unique animals that you will only find in Australia. As a result, a huge chunk of the island is actually a nature reserve! You have so many activities to do on this island as well - it’s a great place for snorkelling and quad biking. There are plenty of hikes you can book too, so it’s a wonderful choice if you’re looking for an active vacation. Funnily enough, it’s better to visit Kangaroo Island right now (June/July) when it is winter over there. You’ll see fewer crowds, the weather is still nice, and there are more animals around to see! Make no mistake about it, there are loads of other fantastic islands scattered around the Australian coast that you could explore. But, if we have to narrow things down to a top three, these are the choices. If you fancy an island holiday this year, consider visiting one of these great places.
