If you have a driveway, you might not really look at it that much - your car will be parked on it while you’re at home, and if your car isn’t parked there, it’s likely because you’re in it somewhere else! In either case, you’re not spending time looking at the drive in front of your house, and that could be a big mistake. In fact, it could be causing you lots of problems that you didn’t know about, not just now, but in the future too - at the very least, it will make your home look unpleasant if your driveway isn’t well-maintained, and it might even cause it to lose value If you’ve not looked at your driveway for a while, now’s the time to do it. Move your car and see what’s underneath it, and if you notice a few of these signs, it could be time to make some repairs. Cracks And Potholes One of the most obvious and easy-to-spot signs that your driveway is going to need repairs is if you can see big cracks and potholes in it. In fact, even small cracks can be a problem because they’ll get bigger over time, especially if moisture gets into them. If you have potholes, they’re more than just a problem that makes your driveway look unattractive; they could actually damage your car too.
If you see these things, it’s definitely time to make repairs, so think about how you want your driveway and front yard to look. One good option is to install pavers, for example, as they’re hard-wearing and come in lots of different styles. Drainage Issues Another problem and a sign that you might need to make repairs to your driveway is if it has drainage issues. Proper drainage is crucial because it means water won’t pool on your driveway’s surface (which can make cracks bigger, as we’ve said, but which can also lead to mould and moss growing, and the surface can become soft, which causes potholes and potential vehicle damage). If you spot lots of water pooling after it rains, then this is likely to be because of bad drainage, and although it might take time and effort to repair, leaving it could be a lot worse. Weeds Growing Weeds and grass sprouting from your driveway doesn’t look good, and it shouldn’t happen, either. Even if it’s been that way for years, it’s still an issue and a sure sign that repairs are necessary. If you can see things growing through your driveway, it means there are cracks and holes and that the underlying structure could be compromised - roots from these plants might have caused damage. You can definitely remove the weeds, but unless you do something about the literally underlying issue, they’ll come back and cause more damage. If this is a big problem, sometimes the best option is to stop fighting the plants and instead just replace the whole driveway with the right materials to prevent weeds from being a problem in the future.
